Abstract

440,046. Oil engines. SANDERS, A. F., Delamere, Park View Crescent, Roundhay, and FOWLER & CO. (LEEDS), Ltd., J., Leathley Road, Hunslet, both in Leeds. July 28, 1934, Nos. 22085/34, 34654/34, 1335/35, and 12159/35. [Class 7 (iii)] The combustion chamber 21 of a compression-ignition engine has its centre located substantially in line with the cylinder bore 24 and its bottom wall 26 coplanar with, Fig. 5, or slightly lower than, Fig. 15, the cylinder end 27 ; orderly swirl in one direction during the early part of the compression stroke is thus succeeded by swirl in the opposite direction at the end of the stroke, when fuel is injected through a nozzle 39. A sharp edge is machined between the end 27 and the side 28 which may be transverse or inclined thereto. The chamber 21 which has a dome-shaped roof and can be spherical, may communicate with a second smaller chamber 35 by a small orifice 36 arranged in the top or side wall, the chamber 35 being formed as an annular space around the chamber 21 or spherical as shown. One of the Provisional Specifications describes an arrangement of fuel nozzle pointing towards the mouth of the chamber 21.
