Abstract
527,796. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. (Patent-Treuhand Ges. fur Elektrische Gluhlampen). April 20, 1939, No. 11920. [Class 39 (i)] A high-pressure metal vapour lamp, the partial pressure of the mercury in which is not less during operation than three atmospheres, contains a refractory body to be heated to incandescence by the discharge, which body consists of a tube the axis of which is substantially in the straight line joining the electrodes and the diameter of which is substantially greater than the distance between the electrodes ; the ratio of the power absorbed in watts to the distance between the electrodes in centimetres is not less than 100. Preferably this ratio is over 300 and the pressure is over 30 atmospheres, the distance between the electrodes being between 2 and 5 mm. Fig. 1 shows such a lamp enclosed in an outer jacket 2 which may be coated with fluorescent material. One of the electrodes 3 is vertically above the other and the incandescent tube 5 is between them, in other forms it surrounds the end of the upper electrode and may be attached thereto.
