Abstract

507,519. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CLACK, B. N. March 29, 1938, No. 9571. [Class 39 (i)] In a sodium vapour discharge lamp the electrodes are formed from a tungsten wire of 1 mm. diameter wound upon a mandrel of À2 mm. diameter tungsten wire, the whole being made into two concentric helices 1, 2 of 3 and 4 turns and 5 mm. and 3 mm. diameter respectively ; the helices are coated with a suspension of barium and strontium carbonates. The electrode is mounted on lead-in wires secured to the free ends of the helices in a U-tube of 16 mm. bore and 430 mm. length, which is evacuated (during which process the lead-in wires carry a heating current) and then filled with sodium and a rare gas; the leads are then joined, and the electrodes heated solely by the discharge current.
