Abstract
550,375. Metal-vapour lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 30, 1941, No. 13966. Convention date, Nov. 2, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] Mercury vapour discharge lamps comprise an envelope 2 having a bulb portion 6 in which are disposed the electrodes 10; 3 and a mercury pool 11, and an extended portion 5 sufficiently spaced from the bulb portion to be at a lower temperature and provide a condensation chamber for the mercury vapour, clear of the light emitting portion of the bulb. The envelope may be of glass or quartz, and the stem 12 may be positioned in the portion 5. The anode 3 is in the form of a tungsten rod with a bead 7 disposed immediately under the cathode, and its' lead has preferably a loop 8 to increase its length. The cathode which is provided with a shield 9, consists of three layers of fine tungsten wire wound alternately in opposite directions on a thicker wire, the whole then being coiled and activated by dipping in molten barium hydroxide or otherwise coated.
