Abstract
530,376. Metal vapour lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and COWHIG, W. T. June 3, 1939, No. 16361. [Class 39 (i)] Heating elements 1, Fig. 1, by which the run-up time of metal vapour lamps is reduced are embedded in vitreous, e.g. quartz, tubes which are sealed to or through the envelope so as to form a unitary structure therewith. As shown in Fig 2, the heating element is in two parts each enclosed in a tube 1 which supports one of the electrodes. The leads to the electrodes pass between the outer wall of the envelope and the tubes 1. In modifications the composite heater element and its quartz enclosure may be wound helically on the inside or outside of the envelope and sealed thereto, or embedded in the wall of the envelope. In the case of a tubular type of lamp, the heater is disposed parallel to the discharge path and either in contact with the wall of the envelope or spaced therefrom.
