Abstract

456,613. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London.-(Patent - Treuhand-Ges. fur Elektrische Gl³hlampen ; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin) Oct. 2, 1935, Nos. 27215 and 33802. [Class 39 (i)] In electric discharge lamps having a filling of a rare gas and metal-e.g. mercuryvapour and a hollow electrode 5, some mercury is placed into the space at the bottom of the electrode ; the space is separated by a diaphragm 6, which has a hole or holes only large enough to allow the mercury to issue in vaporous condition. The gradual escape of the vapour into the discharge space replaces such mercury as is absorbed during the life of the lamp. When run on D.C. the mercury is held in the hollow anodes. As shown a capillary tube 10 is attached to the diaphragm 6; a porous plate made of sintered material such as alumina, glass, molybdenum or tungsten may form the diaphragm. The interior surface of the envelopes may be coated with luminescent material. The electrode is formed of a pot 7 held within an outer cylinder the upper end of the pot being beaded over the cylinder and welded thereto.
