Abstract

679,755. Metal-vapour lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and BEESON, E. J. G. March 20, 1951 [March 29, 1950], No. 7893/50. Class 39 (i). The quantity of mercury in a discharge lamp is adjusted so that when it is completely vaporized during operation, the voltage gradient in the arc lies between 1.25 and 2.5 volts/cm., the arc loading lying between 5 and 25 watts/cm. It is stated that under these conditions the maximum energy of the 4358 Š line is produced with a minimum of background radiation. In an example, the lamp envelope is 190 mm. long and 34 mm. in diameter, and the electrodes, of the type rendered thermionic by the discharge, are 160 mm. apart; the quantity of mercury is about 45 milligrams. The discharge may be started by heating the lamp.
