Abstract

525,878. Alloys. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., MURPHY, A. J., and WELLS, S. A. E. Dec. 1, 1938, No. 35020. Addition to 474,757. [Class 82 (i)] Aluminium alloys containing magnesium and zinc contain also a small amount of niobium. The alloys may contain 0.5-8 per cent. of magnesium, 1-14 per cent. of zinc, 0.02-0.2 per cent. of niobium, up to 2 per cent. of silicon, and up to 4 per cent. of copper, with or without minor amounts of other metals such as iron, nickel; cobalt, chromium, manganese, antimony and cadmium. The niobium may be introduced in the form of an alloy made by adding ferroniobium to aluminium, or in the form of an aluminium-niobium alloy containing about 5 per cent. of niobium made by diluting with aluminium an alloy containing 20-30 per cent. of niobium.
