Abstract
522,728. Rail spikes. MILLS, Ltd., EXECUTORS OF J., and MACBETH, A. Sept. 22, 1938, No. 27602. [Class 89 (ii)] In fastening rails or chairs to wooden sleepers a spike is employed with a head part in the form of a loop 21, Fig. 1, which is so shaped that when driven into position as shown in Fig. 3 the loop is placed in tension. A tail part 22 may be inclined as shown in Fig. 1 for this purpose. A wooden bush 26 may be fitted in the hole in the chair before insertion of the spike. The part of the shank in the vicinity of the loop may be cranked so that when driven into position the shank is straightened. In a modification, the spike is driven into the sleeper alongside the base of the rail, the end 22, Fig. 9, of the loop engaging the side of the rail base.
