Abstract

635,179. Securing railway rails. STEVENS, A. H. (American Brake Shoe Co.). Dec. 16, 1947, No. 33111 [Class 104 (ii)] Creeping preventing. A rail anchor or clip 13, Fig. 1, comprises an arm 25 extending laterally from a shank 24 to exert frictional pressure against the web 15 of a rail, the lower end of the shank being fitted into a hole in a tie plate or the like 11. The arm and shank are preferably integral, with the web-engaging end of the arm bent either upwardly, as shown, or downwardly. In the example the tie plate 11 is formed with longitudinally extending ribs 17 in which spike holes are provided, the clips 13 being arranged therein in staggered relationship on opposite sides of the rail, and ordinary flange-engaging spikes driven into the other holes. The shanks 24 are substantially U-shaped in cross-section and are located in the spike holes with the limbs of the U towards the rails. These limbs may have rounded or square corners, and the back of the shank remote from the rails is tapered downwardly in order that it may be adapted to the hole in the tie plate, which tapers outwardly at its upper end due to the fact that it is formed by punching through from the bottom of the tie rod. The sides of the shank may taper inwardly towards their lower end. Fig. 5 shows a bottom view of one form of clip, with shank 24 and arm 25.
