Abstract

683,960. Securing railway rails. ELASTIC RAIL SPIKE CO., Ltd., and THOMPSON, H. E. Nov. 15, 1950. [Dec. 7, 1949] No. 31435/49. Class 104 (ii). In a method of fastening a railway rail a removable packing piece 6 is applied to the rail foot 2 and a spike 7 is driven into the sleeper 5 so that a resilient bent over arm 8 on the spike applies pressure to the rail foot 2 through the medium of the packing piece 6 but does not overlie the rail foot 2. As shown the packing piece 6 has a tongue 6d to bear on the rail foot 2, and has its side edges at one end tapered at 6f, 6g to facilitate entry between the walls 6a of a base plate 4 and the rail foot 2, and its upper edge tapered at 6h to lift the arm 8 when driven thereunder. The walls 6a of the base-plate 4 are inwardly bowed and the seating 3 is upwardly bowed transversely to the direction of the rail. On removal of the packing piece 6 the arms 8 bear on the rounded edges 3a of walls 4a to hold the base-plate 4 against the sleeper 5. When a base-plate 4 is not provided the undersides of the packing piece 6 has teeth to grip the sleeper 5.
