Abstract
678,929. Securing rails to sleepers. DUNN, W. E. Sept. 27, 1950. [July 13, 1949] No. 18450/49. Class 104 (ii). Railway rails are secured to sleepers 3 or a base plate 2 and sleeper 3 by a clamping member 6 located beneath the cross-bar 8 of a U-shaped spike member 5 the legs of which are driven into the sleeper 3. The spike may be U-shaped, as shown in Fig. 4, or in the form of two inverted L-shaped pieces Fig. 6. The cross-bar 8, Fig. 4, or the arms 7a, Fig. 6, may be bent inwardly towards the rail and perpendicular to the spike shanks 7. The clamping member which may be laminated may be arched as shown to provide a shoulder to bear against the side face of the cross-bar of the U-shaped spike member and the spike may be of square, circular or any other cross-sectional shape.
