Abstract

4089. Holden, E. Feb. 18. Chairs.-Comprises spikes,trenails, and hollow cylinders used in combination to secure chairs to sleepers. The method is shown in Fig. 1. The outer cylinder e is of iron or steel; the upper end of it is provided with a flange to rest on the chair, while the lower end is sharpened ; it may be split for a portion of, or its entire, length. Having been inserted partly or wholly in an opening in the sleeper, the wooden trenail d is placed in position, and the metal spike c is driven in, securing the whole. The head of the spike c may be made to fit the cylinder e more or less. The central spike may be dispensed with, and a solid trenail used.
