Abstract

690,178. Securing railway rails. GUEST, KEEN & NETTLEFOLDS (MIDLANDS), Ltd. May 9, 1951. [April 15, 1950] No. 9303/50. Class 104 (ii). In a rail fastening device formed from resilient wire, bar or strip as a clip 22 having an upper portion 23 and a lower portion 24 joined by a part 25 and provided with holes 29, 30 to accommodate a fastening member 20, 21 upstanding from the sleeper or base plate, the fastening member is tightened to press the upper portion 23 into engagement with a rail flange 16 and the part 25 into engagement with an abutment 17 on the sleeper or base plate 11 to move the clip 22 inwardly so that the lower portion 24, the underside of which is free from dependent projections, bears against the edge of the rail flange 16 to press the opposite rail flange 15 into engagement with an abutment 14 formed on the sleeper or base plate 11. The holes 29, 30 may be elongated and provided with strengthening flanges 29a 30a, so arranged that their faces 31 abut to prevent over tightening of the clip 22. The front end of the lowerportion is ribbed as at 33 (Fig. 4) and the front end of the upper portion may be bent upwardly as at 27 about an axis parallel to the length of the rail and convex about an axis transverse to the rail axis, alternatively the forward end 27 may be bent downwards and backwards, Fig. 7 (not shown). In an alternative arrangement, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) for use with concrete sleepers the flanges 29a, 30a do not abut and the clip is held down by one of the bolts 13 holding the base plate to the sleeper.
