Abstract

761,893. Wood-screws; nuts. GUEST, KEEN & NETTLEFOLDS (MIDLANDS). Ltd. Jan. 28, 1955 [Feb. 13, 1954], No. 4283/54, Classes 89 (1) and 89 (2). [Also in Group XXX] A rail-fastening element has an anchor-portion for screw-threaded engagement with a sleeper or anchor-member fixed thereto, and a rail or chair flange-engaging arm integral with the anchor-portion and formed as a loop to bear on or against said flange, the loop being helical and extending in the opposite direction to the threads. In one arrangement the element is a spike 11, Fig. 1, having a screw-threaded end 10 and an arm 13 integral with the other end. The spike secures a rail-flange 20 to a bearing-plate 16 and this plate to a sleeper 18, and each arm is supported by a projection 22 having an arcuate face 23 engaging the arm. In another arrangement, the spike is made from ovalsection stock, twisted to form the screw-thread, and the arm may be bent to form a C in plan with the free end bent parallel with the spikeshank to engage the edge of the rail &c. flange. In another arrangement the element is a nut having a body 40, Fig. 7, and arm 46, the body having a screw-threaded bore to engage a bolt 42. The body may have a slotted portion 48, the screw-thread therein being of slightly smaller diameter, whereby the nut is locked on the bolt.
