Abstract
726,128. Spikes. HODEL, H. May 12, 1953 [May 30, 1952], No. 13200/53. Class 89(2). [Also in Group XXII] A resilient rail spike comprises a rolled steel bar bent so that its ends 2, 3, Fig. 1, engage each other to be driven into the tie 1, and the loop between the ends has portions 2a, 3a engaging the side of the rail flange 4a and a part 5, Fig. 3, engaging the top of the flange. The spike is particularly for use with a concrete tie 1 having a bored plug 1a of wood or like material to receive the ends 2, 3, which may be barbed. In a modification, the portions 2a, 3a, Fig. 4, do not engage the flange and part 5 is bent to conform with the transverse outline of the flange. In another arrangement, the spike is formed from a bar a, Fig. 8, slotted along part of its length and deformed by forging to form the rail engaging loops a1.
