Abstract
807,873. Spikes. MILLS Ltd. J. [Executors of] Sept. 21, 1955 [Sept. 25, 1954], No. 27739/54. Class 89(2). A rail-spike has a looped-head 23, Fig. 1,. ending in an arm 24 for gripping a railflange 26, the arm abutting the flange, after the spike has been driven to a certain extent, at a position 30 spaced from the position 25 of intial engagement of arm and flange. The spike is driven into a sleeper 20 adjacent the edge of the flange with the arm at right-angles to the direction of the rail. A shoulder 32 abuts the flange to limit the extent of driving of the spike. In another arrangement, the loop 23, Fig. 2, extends normal to the shank and the arm 24 lies under the juncture of loop and shank, so that driving is limited by abutment of the loop on the arm. In yet another arrangement, the loop 23, Fig. 5, extends vertically and the arm 24 passes under the shoulder 32 of the loop, to be engaged thereby after the required driving. This arrangement may be incorporated in a spike having two spaced legs, the ends of the arms being interconnected by a bar extending parallel to the plane of the loops.
