Abstract

854,755. Metal railway sleepers and means for holding rails in position. NELSON, H. D. Aug. 1, 1958 [May 10, 1957], No. 14860/57. Class 104 (2). A metal sleeper 1 comprises an inverted channel with transverse recesses 7 cut through the channel web 8 of a width to fit closely the flat bottom flanges 5 of the rails 3 and has a tongue 10 extending from the web 8 at one side of each recess 7 to engage over a rail flange 5 at that side of the recess 7 and a slot 11 in the web 8 extending at rightangles from the other side of the recess 7, the other end of which slot 11 provides an abutment 15 for a locking member 4 carried solely by the webs 8 and the rail flange 5 at the slotted side of the recess 7 when an end 12 of the locking member 4 overlying the rail flange 5 is urged downwardly on the flange S. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the web 8 of an inverted channel-shaped metal sleeper 1 is cut-away so that the rail flange 5 rests on the edges 6 of the flanges 9 of the channel. The locking member 4 has a V-shaped slot 17 at its end remote from, and a cam-shaped portion 16 beneath, the overhanging portion 12. The locking member 4 is inserted in the slot 11 with the V-shaped slot 17 engaging over the web 8 and is then hammered downwardly so that the cam portion 16 rides over the edge on one side of the rail flange 5 to force the other side of the rail flange 5 beneath the overhanging portion 10 and to lock the member 4 in position between the end of the slot 11 and the rail flange 5. In an alternative embodiment shown in Fig 8, the rail flange 5 is held in position by nut, bolt and washer, 22, 21 and 23 and a clamping plate 19 which at one end engages the top of the web 8 and is provided with downwardly-turned portion to engage in the end of the slot 11 and at the other end overhangs the rail flange 5. Wooden filler pieces 2 are inserted within the sleeper channel beneath each recess 7 and are held in position by nails 26 passing, with clearance, through the flanges 9. The bottoms 6 of the recesses 7 are inclined upwards towards the adjacent end of the sleeper.
