Abstract

832,872. Securing railway rails to chairs and sleepers. VOSSLOH-WERKE G.m.b.H. Feb. 12, 1958 [Feb. 16, 1957], No. 4552/58. Class 104 (2). In a device for securing railway rails to sleepers in which butt straps or ribs are fixed relative to the sleeper to define the track and receive a rail flange therebetween, the rail flange is engaged on both sides of the rail by spring stirrup having shank ends which, on the side of the straps or ribs remote from the rail, engage in recesses formed in the straps or ribs and each stirrup has a portion to rest on the rail flange. The spring stirrups engage at their shank ends in two separate recesses formed in each strap or rib, of which at least one recess comprises a slot open at one end of the strap or rib into which the appropriate shank end is introduced from the side by spreading or opening out the stirrup. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1-3 the ribs 6 formed on a baseplate 3 are provided at one end with a hole 14 and at the other end with a recess 15 which is open at the end of the rib 6. Both the hole 14 and the recess 15 are closed at their ends facing the rail 1. To fix the stirrup-shaped spring 9, 10, 11 to the rib 6 one of its shank ends 13 is inserted in the hole 14 and the spring is then rotated in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the rail 1 until its other shank end 12 snaps over the end of the rib 6 into the recess 15. The spring is held in position by the rail flange engaging portion 9 abutting the edge of the rib 6 facing the rail 1. In a modification, shown in Fig. 4, the rail 1 is seated on a wooden sleeper 4 and butt straps 16 are held in position by two spikes 20 thereon engaging bores 21. Each butt strap 16 is provided on the side remote from the rail 1 with a support flange 18 located in a recess 19 in the sleeper 4. In yet a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the butt straps are held in position on a concrete sleeper by the spikes engaging a wooden dowel or by dependent bars or plates concreted in the sleeper. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 10 the butt strap 16 is provided with a bore 28 and is held in position by a sleeper screw 29. The curved portions 31, 32, leading from the portion 9 to the shank ends 12, 13, project further to both sides of the spring than the curved portions 10, 11 of the previous embodiments, thus resulting in a larger spring movement.
