4 COMBINED TIE Ann .Iomr.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
Application filed January 10, 1913. Serial at. 211,155.
To all whom it may concern Be it,known that I, PHILIP E. Moons, residing at McHenry, Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Combined Ties and Joints, of which the following is-aspecification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention comprises a combined railway tie and joint. It is contemplated among its objects to produce a metal tie which will adapt itself to a large range of uses; which will consist of few parts so assembled that the will receive and retain a rail securel and positively to the elimination of uneven joints and spreading; which can be assembled and disassembled with a minimum of fastening or securing elements; which will lend itself readily to the use of various fillers, sound-deadening compositions, ballast and the like, and'which will, in a word, provide a very practical device for this purpose.
Other objects and advantages will be in part apparent, and in part developed more fully in the description which follows.
Drawings are included which illustrate an embodiment of the invention, the following views being shown Figure 1, is a view in perspective illustrating a single, and a double tie construction embodying my invention, and a rail joint in conjunction therewith;-
Fig. 2, is a view in top plan of a double form of tie and joint;
Fig. 3, is a view in bottom plan thereof,
Fig. 4, is a view in longitudlnalsect on of a tie and joint-of the type shown in Flgs. 2 and 3; I
Fig. 5, is a view in top plan of one of the components of this form; and
Fig. 6 is a view in longitudinal section of a single tie and rail securing means.
In these drawings 1 designates a double tie and 2 a single tie embodying my lnvention. Each has a body portion 3, and side flanges 4 to constitute an integral support or saddle which may be filled with concrete, sound-deadening compositions, ballast and the like after the tie has been assembled and secured in place in connection with a I:a1 l. For this Durpose each tie, or form of tie 1S proyided on the body portion thereof, with openings 5, an edge of which is struck up to form a lip or flange (3 adapted to receive and retain a flange of a rail 7. These lugs are at one end of the openings 5, and preferably arranged in pairs on the body of the tie, one at each extremity thereof in the single form and two or-more sets in the double etc.
Adapted to cooperate with these lugs in retaining the rail in place on the tie, there is provided a locking member having a body portion 8, in which there are openings 9, upon corresponding, oppositely disposed edges of which openings there are struck up lugs or retainers 10. This locking member is adapted to be placed on the under side of the tie in a position which will permit the lugs 10 to pass through the openings 5 in the body portion of the tie and cooperate with the lugs 6 thereon to engage and retain the flange of the rail 7.-
Means are also provided for securing the members in locked position, and as here shown comprise openings 11 in both the tie and locking members, said openings being adapted to register when the members are in locked position, and be secured in this rela- I tion by a bolt or the like 12.
It is contemplated, in the present inven-' tion, to provide a fish plate or rail joint in combination with the tie structure just described, and as'here shown such joint comprises extended portions 6 of the lugs 6, and extended portions 10 of the lugs 10, which extensions are shaped to engage the web' portlon of the rail. These extended portions are provided with openings which are adapted to register with the bolt-holes in the'ends of the rails, and be secured thereto suitably as by the usual bolts 13.
As an additional locking means for the members, and for the purpose also, of preventing lateral movement between the-members, the body portion may be provided with straps or the like 14, which extend across the openings 5 inthe body portion and are do pressed centrally so as to lie in the plane of the locking member 8 when it is in position as shown in Fig. 6. By this means an edge of the opening 9 in the'member 8 enga es an edge of the strap 14, and forms a positive lock against the transverse movement of either part, when so assembled.
While I have disclosed my invention in the embodiment herein illustrated, it will be understood that the general principles of its application are herein shown, and I do not iscontemplated to use the members without the flanges l, particularly in bridge and the like constructions, or in any other location where it might be desirable to secure the 5 tie to a wooden or other separate base. Many other. changes may be made in the general construction and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.
I member, thelug .on one member passing through the opening in the other member and juxtaposed to the lug on the other member to receive' and to retam a rail flange; and
automatic means for locking the members when so assembled.
2. A combined railway tie and joint comprising coacting locking members each provided with an opening and with a lug at one edge of the opening; one of the members being adapted to be associated with the other member, the lug on one member passing through the opening 1n the other member and uxtaposed thereto to receive and retain between said lugs, a rail flange; and an up standing member carried by a lug adapted to engage and be secured to a web of the rail.
3. In combination with rails arranged end to end, a combined tie and joint comprising eoacting members each provided with an opening and with a lug at one edge of said opening; said members being associated, :1 lug on one member passino through an open ing in the other member and retaining a flange of a rail therebetween; jauton'iatic means for locking the members when so assembled; and an upstanding member disposed on a lug and secured to the web of the rails to constitute a connection therefor.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature.
PHILIP MOORE.
