Abstract
885,334. Securing railway rails to sleepers. VOSSLOH-WERKE G.m.b.H. Sept. 25, 1959 [Oct. 6, 1958], No. 32592/59. Addition to 832,872. Class 104 (2). In a modification of the invention described in the parent Specification, the rail guide means comprise the head of a double or single shankretaining element of bar material which are fixed or driven into a socket or sockets in the sleeper on one or other side of the rail flange, the upper part or parts of which retaining elements projecting from the sleeper define two recesses to accommodate the two shanks of the stirrup, one at least of the recesses being shaped as a laterally open slot. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the retaining elements are formed from a single length of bar material of rectangular cross-section and comprise two shanks 8, 9 and parts 5, 6 and 7 forming the rail guiding means and hooks for retaining the ends 13 of the spring stirrup 11. The hook part 7 is bent through a 180 degrees arc so as to form a closed loop with a plate 16 when in the operative position. The hook part 6 is bent to 90 degrees to form a laterally open hook. The middle part 12 of the stirrup 11 lies beside the part 5 of the retaining element so that the stirrup 11 cannot slide off the rail flange 2. The shanks 8, 9 are driven directly into apertures in wooden sleepers or into sleeves 19 of the housing 18 embedded in a concrete sleeper 15. The plates 16 interconnect the retaining elements arranged on each side of the rail 1. The parts 5, 6 and 7 are upwardly and outwardly inclined relative to the rail 1. In an alternative embodiment shown in Fig. 7, the hook portions 26 and 27 are formed on separate shanks 24, 25 held in position in sleeves 20 by the shanks 23 of a U- shaped member 22. The lower ends of the shanks 24, 25 are bent at 28, 29 to secure the shanks 24, 25 in position in the sleeper. In a further embodiment shown in Fig. 8 the retaining element has a single shank 39 formed by bending a single length of bar material and the hooks 40, 41 are formed on each end of the bent bar. In yet a further embodiment shown in Fig. 9, the retaining element has a single shank 35 and a T-shaped head 36 provided with upwardly and outwardly inclined portions on its underside. In this embodiment the ends 34 of the stirrup 33 bear on a plate 14 inserted in the recessed flange 38 of a sleeve 37.
