By means of a tool which is not represented and which is-engaged in the grooves 13 of the bolt and comprises a lever arm adapted to act on the spring 12, this spring is compressed and then the key 14 is insertedin the grooves 14a, whereupon the tool is removed. The tie b is provided with two apertures 17 engagingeach projection 16 of the supporting member 5 in order to prevent this member from any unintentional sliding movement-011 the tie. Thesupporting mem ber 5is also provided with two longitudi nally extending raised portions 18 against the inner edge of which the flange 3 of the rail abuts in order to prevent the two web portions 2 of the rail from spreading apart. v Between two ties b to which the ends of a rail are secured, the rail is fixed to alternate ties a by means of a similar device as above described and comprising the clamping plates 6, supporting member 5 and fastening device B. On alternate ties c the rail is supported by a tie plate 19 having two raised edges 20 and which plate is fixed to the tie 0 by means of a fastening device B as above described.
Itcould happen that one has to connect a track formed of ordinary T rails to a track composed of rails according to this invention. This case is illustrated on the right hand side of Figure 1 and in Figs. 4, 5 and G. The rail joint is supported by a sleeper of double width (Z. The end of a short section of T- rail 15 is deprived of its head C over a length 1 and penetrates into the interior of the rail .1 between the two branches of a supporting member 21 similar to the member 5 above described. Clamping plates 24 rest on the flanges 3 of the rail 1 and the foot D of the T-rail 15 and abut on the edges 9 of the supporting member 21. The clamping plates 24 and the member 21 are secured to the tie (Z by means of fastening devices B as above described. Fish plates 25 and 26 are disposed on both sides of the two railends to be joined and are suitably bent at 27 in order to coact with the webs 2 of the rail 1 and with the web 22 of the rail 15.
Inthe modification according to Figure 9 wooden ties e are used. The bolts 10 of the fastening devices B which secure the clamping plates 6, the supporting member 5 and the tie plate 31 to the tie e traverse the tie; a washer plate 30 is inserted between the heads 11 of the bolts and the tie. The tie plate 31 is also provided with apertures 17 engaging projections 16 of the supporting member 5.
In the modification according to Figures 10 and 11, the bolts 10 have their heads 11 engaged beneath the tie plate 32 which is secured to the tie e by means of wood-screws 35. In this construction first the tie plate 32 with the bolts 10 is placed on the tie and the screws 35 are screwed home with their heads turned into the position as shown in Figure 10. Then the supporting member 5 is placed over the bolts 10 and the rail 1 is placed ver the U-shaped portion of the member 5. Finally the clamping plates 6 are placed over the bolts 10 and the fastening device B is assembled. It is now not possible for the screws 85 to get loose since the supporting member 5 prevents the screw head from turning.
In the modification shown in Figure 12, the supporting member 37 is provided with longitudinally extending grooves 38 which are obtained by pressing the material so that corresponding projections 39 are termed on the lower face of the supporting member 37.
The grooves 38 are adapted to receive the edges 40 of the flanges 3 of the rail 1, while the projections 39 are engaged by grooves 41 provided in the tie 45. The clamping plates 6 and the supporting member 37 are again secured to the tie 45 by means of fastening devices B.
If a track formed of rails according to this invention is used for electric traction, the ends of two consecutive rails can be electrically united by means of a copper conductor 42 disposed between the head of the rail 1 and thesupporting member 37. The conductor 42 has its two ends 43 bent down wardly and inserted into vertical openings 44 provided in the supporting member 37.
I claim:
1. In a railroad construction, in combination with ties and rails supported thereon, said rails having in transverse section the shape of a reversed U, a connecting device for adjacent ends of consecutive rails including a. supporting member having in transverse section the shape of a reversed U and having horizontal. flange portions seated on the tie, said rails having two lateral flanges placed on said member, clamping plates lying on said flanges and said supporting member on opposite sides of each rail, and fastening means for yieldingly locking the clamping plate, the supporting member and the tie together.
2. In a railroad construction, in combination with ties and rails supported thereon, said rails having in transverse sectionthe shape of a reversed U, a connection device for adjacent ends of consecutive rails including a supporting member having in transverse section the shape of a reversed U and having horizontal flange portions seated on the tie, the rails being placed over the supporting member and having two lateral flanges seated on said horizontal flanges of the supporting member, clamping plates lying on said flanges and on said supporting member on opposite sides of each rail, a bolt traversing the clamping plate, the supporting member and the tie, a key engaged in the upper end of said bolt and a spring placed over the bolt between said key and the clamping plate.
3. In a railroad construction, in combination with ties and rails supported thereon, said rails having in transverse section the shape of a reversed U, a rail supporting member placed on alternate ties, said rail supporting member having in transverse section the shape of a reversed U and being provided with horizontal flange portions seated on the tie, said rails being provided with lateral flanges seated on said horizontal portions of the rail supporting member, clamping plates lying on said rail flanges and on said rail supporting member, a bolt traversing the clamping plate, the supporting member and the tie, a key engaged in the upper end of said bolt, and a spring placed over the bolt between said key and said clamping plate.
4. In a railroad construction, in combination with ties and rails supported on the ties, said rails having in transverse section the shape of a reversed U and including a head, two web portions and two lateral flanges, a tie plate carried by each alternate tie and supporting said flanges, and resilient fasten 1o ing means for securing the tie plate to the tie, said fastening means including a bolt traversing the tie and the tie plate andextending between the two web portions of the rail, a key engaged on the bolt and a spring 15 inserted between the key and the tie plate.
5. A railroad construction comprising rails having in transverse section the shape of a reversed U and including a head, two web portions and two lateral flanges, a rail 20 supporting member placed on the ties and having in transverse section the shape of a reversed U extending between the two web port-ions of the rail, clamping plates lying on the flanges of the. rail and on the rail 25 supporting member, and resilient fastening means for locking the clamping plate, the rail supporting member and the tie together.
6. A railroad construction comprising rails having in transverse section the shape 0 of a reverse U and including a head, two
web portions and two lateral flanges, a rail supporting member placed on the ties and having in transverse section the shape of a reversed U extending between the two web .5 portions of the rail, an electric conductor placed between the rail and the rail supporting member and electrically connecting the adjacent ends of consecutive rails, clamping plates lying on the rail supporting member {,0 and on the flanges of the rail, and resilient fastening means locking the clamping plate, the rail supporting member and the tie together.
