Referring more in detail to the drawing, I0 and Lil designate respectively the rails of a joint.
i2 is the joint-plate or chair, preferably constructed in a single piece having a base-plate l3 and inwardly extending flanges I4 formed on the side edges thereof which are adapted to engage over the base-flanges l5 of said rail sections I0 and II. In addition to said base flanges the said rail section includes the head l6 and the web I]. The inner contour of said flanges M are shaped, so as to conform to the configuration of the base flanges l5.
The aforesaid flanges l4 extend the entire length of the base-plate l3 and are upwardly directed extensions l8, thereby engaging the web I! of the rails.
If desired, these extensions I 8 may reach the lower edges I 9 of the head 16 of the rails l0 and H and form means for providing an addi-" tional ,supportfor said heads I6 of the rails.

In parallel alignment with said elongated lug 24 is an elongated slot 26 through which the cam penetrates.
The cam 2|, as used in this invention, is shown detailed in Figures 4 and 5 and consists of a flat steel member having a curved cam-like portion 21 which terminates at one end into a lever 28 by means of which the cam may be manipulated when in assembled position, that is, when the roughened or serrated curved cam 21 frictionally engages the upper face 29 of the rail base flange l5. Of course, the cam turns on an oifset bore 30. The serrated cam portion 21 is preferably biased, as indicated by the numeral 3|, so as to conform to the usual taper of the base flange of the rail and to facilitate a positive grip when the cam is tightened against the rail.
In order to prevent the cam 2| from opening up when in clamped position I use a fiat spring 32, the free end 33 of which presses against the upper edge 34 of said cam-lever 28, and another short flat spring 35 lies on top of said first mentioned spring 32 in a manner as best shown in Figure 1, Both springs are held securely in position by means of a screw and lockwasher.
From the foregoing description the use and operation of the improved invention will be readily understood and it will be noticed that bolts, nuts and locknuts are entirely dispensed with thus eliminating the necessity of drilling holes through the rail terminals thereby considerably weakening the same.
In practice, I have found the design of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eificient and practical; yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of the device will necessarily vary, I therefore desire to emphasize that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required without sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described comprising a one piece rail-chair adapted to receive the adjacent ends of the rail sections, said rail-chair arranged to conform to the contour of the basefiange and web of said rail sections and including a base-plate having inwardly extending flanges and upwardly directed extensions, the ends of said inwardly extending flanges provided with elongated openings, an upstanding lug along each side of said openings adapted to pivotally support a cam which securely grips the top portion of the base-flange of said rail sections.
2. In a device of the class described comprising a one piece rail-chair adapted to receive the adjacent ends of the rail sections, said rail-chair arranged to conform to the contour of the baseflange and web of said rail sections and including a base-plate having inwardly extending flanges and upwardly directed extensions, the ends of said inwardly extending flanges provided with elongated openings, an upstanding lug along each side of said openings adapted to pivotally support a cam which securelygrips the top portion of the base-flange of said rail sections, said cam provided at the exposed portion with a lever-like extension which comes, when said cam is tightened against the base-flange of said rail section, in parallel alignment with said rail-chair.
3. In a device of the class described comprising a one piece rail-chair adapted to receive the adjacent ends of the rail sections, said rail-chair arranged to ccrridrm:v to the contour of the base- 7 flange and web of rail. sections and includinga base-plate having inwardly extending flanges and upwardly directed extensions, the ends of said inwardly extending flanges provided with elon-- gated openings, an upstanding lug along each side of .said openings adapted to pivotally support a cam which securely grips the top portion of the base flange of said rail sections, said cam provided at the exposed portion with a lever-like extension which comes, when said cam is tightened against the base-flange of said rail section, in parallel alignment with said rail chair and spring means to adjustably retain said cam in locked position;
4. In a device of the class described comprising a one-piece rail-chair adapted to receive the adjacent ends of the rail sections, said rail-chair arranged to conform to the contour of the baseflange and web of said rail sections and -including a base-platehavin'g inwardly extending flanges and upwardly directed extensions, the ends of said inwardly extending flanges provided with elongated openings, a cam pivotally mounted penetrating said elongatedopening and adapted to securely clinch the rail section, said cam provided at the exposed portion with a lever-like extension which comes, when said cam is tightened against said rail section, in parallel alignment with said rail-chair, spring means to ad-' justably retain said cam" in locked position, said spring means comprising a flat spring adapted to exert pressureto the'free end of said leverlike extension of said earn.
5. In a device of the class described comprising a rail-chair adapted to receive the adjacent ends of the rail sections, said rail-chair arranged'to conform to the contour of the base-flange and.
