Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK WASCHEK, 0F HAMTRAMCK, MICHIGAN.
RAIL-CLAMP.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK WASCHEK, a citizen 0f Poland, residing at Hamtramck, county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Clamps, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to improvements in metal railroad ties and rail clamps used in connection therewith.
It is the principal object of the invention to provide a tieand rail clamp of a simple and inexpensive, yet durable and reliable construction.
A further object of the invention is the provision of' a tie which allowsof a quick and easy exchange of the rails as well as the movable clamps.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will become known as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a railway switch showing the ties and rail clamps constructed according to the present invention. r
Fig. 2 is a side view'of a railroad tie and rail clamps constructed according to the present invention, the view is taken along line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective fragmentary view of a rail on two ties and a'rail clamp.
Fig-4 is an end View of a plurality of ties and rail clamps, and
Fig. 5 shows in detail top plan, end and side views, a rail clamp constructed according to the present invention. v
The tie 10 of metal is I-shaped 1n crosssection, and carries the rails 11 of the customary well known construction.
The rail clamps 12 used in connection with the ties 10 comprise each a body member 13 provided with two depending side fianges 14 and 15 gripping with their lower, rectangularly bent ends 16 and 17 under the lower face of the upper horizontal beam 18 of the I-tie.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, Application mea May 4, 1921. serial Nb. 466,776.
A projection 19 of the member 13 is 'uprovided with bolt holes 2O` for the passage of the spike bolts 21 entering with their lower ends openings 21 in the ties. The opposite end of the member 13 carries at its top face a wedge shaped member 22 adapted to engage with its upper end the web 23'of the rail below the head 24 of the rail, while the inclined lower face of the member 22 rests against the upper face of the rail foot flange 25.
Similarly constructed clamps 26 engage the rails and tiesvupon the opposite side of the rail.
At the joint of two rail 27 and 28 (Fig. 4) the wedge shaped members of the clamps, of two adjoining ties are extended to engage the webs of both adjoining rails as shown at 29 Fig. 4.
It will be obvious, that changes may be made in the general arrangement and construction of the minor details without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
The combination of a metal vrailroad tie of I-shaped cross-section with clamps adapted to be secured to the tie, one upon each side of a rail, each of said clamps comprising' a body member, lateral rectangularly bent flanges on said` member adapted to n grip under the top beam of the I, a projection perforated for the passage of fastening bolts and a wedge shape element adapted to engagev with its upper edge the web of a rail underneath the head thereof and resting with its inclined lower face against the upper face of the rail foot flange the wedge shape element being extended in length to engage the webs of two adjoining rails.
In testimony ywhereof I have ailixed my signature.
FRANK WASCHEK.
