Be it known that 1, TIM Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlingame, in the county of San Mateo and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crossties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in cross ties, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character having associated therewith means whereby the track rails may be effectively secured thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved tie made of metal and which is constructed in a manner to comply effectually with the requirements of practice and which tie comprises a member substantially I-shaped in cross section and having means for bracing or reinforcing the portions thereof subjected to the greatest strain.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved tie whereby certain important advantages are attained. and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be'definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now nroceed'to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a cross tie constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention with rails applied thereto; 7
Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 with certain of the parts omitted;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the plate embodied in Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of one of the fastening members as herein included; and
' Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a slightly modified form of invention.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, T denotes a tie constructed in accordthe fastening member F, to be hereinafter more particularly referred to, maybe readily applied.
Each end of the tie T has integrally formed with the web 5 and the flanges 1 and 2 thereof the end plate or web 6, preferably disposed on an upward and inward incline, and also integrally formed with the flanges l and 2 and the web 5 adjacent each end of the tie T are the bracing or reinforcing webs 7 extending laterally therefrom. The end plates or webs 6 and the bracing or reinforcing webs 7 materially strengthen the opposite end portions of the tie T so that the tie effectively resists the strain imposed thereupon 'and particularly when rolling stool: traveling on the rails R passes over the tie. The outer end portions of the flanges 2 are of greater width than the inner portions of the flanges 2 and resting upon said outer end portions of the flanges 2 are the plates P extending entirely across the flanges 2. The outer marginal portion of the flange 2 is beveled and is adapted to engage within a. correspondingly grooved edge 8 of an upstanding lu 9 disposed transversely of the flanges 2. The. plate P is provided with an upstanding angular flange or rib 10 adapted to overlie a base flange 11 of a rail R resting upon the plate P and whereby means are provided for holding the rail to the tie.
F denotes a fastening member resting upon the flanges 2 and adapted to be moved longitudinally of the tie T. Said fastener F includes the depending flanges 12 at the opposite sides thereof provided with the inwardly directed lugs 14L which engage beneath the flanges 2 at the outer longitudinal margins thereof. By this means, the fastening member F is efiectively held to the flanges 2 but readily moved longitudinally of the tie T. The cutaway portions at in the central portion of the flanges 2 are of a length in excess of the length of the fastenmember to the tie. The outer end of the fastening member F is provided with a properly formed extension or lip 15 adapted to engage over the inner base flange 11 of a rail R whereby further means are provided for maintainin the rail in applied position. The outer or under face of the extension or lip 15 is provided with a vertically disposed rib or bead 16 which seats within a notch 17 in the inner marginal portion of the plate P so that when the fastening member F is in operative engagement with the inner base flange 11 of a rail B, said fastening member F also serves to hold the plate 1 against movement in a direction transverse of the tie T so that said fastening member F also operates to maintain the plate P in applied position. Each end portion of the flanges 2 inwardly of the applied plate P but in close proximity thereto is provided with an opening 18 adapted to register with an opening 19 in the fastening member F and through which registering openings is adapted to be disposed a holding spike 20, or the like.
In Fig. 6, 1 illustrate an embodiment of my invention particularly adapted for use in connection with a curved rail or at a switch and in this embodiment, it is to be noted that the angular flange or rib 10 and the fastening device F are considerably heavier than the flange 10 and the fastening member F, hereinbefore referred to.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a tie constructed in accordancewith my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles'and spirit thereof, and for this reason, I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A rail tie comprising an elongated member I-shaped in cross section, the central portions of the upper flanges of said member being cut-away, upstanding lugs carried by the opposite end portions of the member, a plate resting upon each end portion of the member, a marginal portion of said plate interlocking with the adjacent lug, said plate being provided with an angular flange adapted to engage the base flange of a rail rested thereon, and fastening members slidably engaged withthe upper flanges of the first named member, one of said fastening members being engageable with the inner base flange of a rail mounted upon a plate. A rail tie comprising an elongated member I-shaped in cross section, the central portions of the upper flanges of said member being cut-away, upstanding lugs carried by the opposite end portions of the member, a plate resting upon each end portion of the member, a marginal portion of said plate interlocking with the adjacent lug, said plate being provided with an angular flange adapted to en age the base flange of a rail rested thereon, fastening. members slidably engaged with the upper flanges of the first named member, one of said fastening members being engageable with the inner base flange of a rail mounted upon a plate, said plates coacting with the opposite ends of the first named member.
3. A rail tie comprising an elongated member Ishaped in cross section, the central portions of the upper flanges of said member being cutaway, upstanding lugs carried by the opposite end portions of the member, a plate resting upon each end portion of the member, a marginal portion of said plate interlocking with the adjacent lug, said plate being provided with an angular flange adapted to engage the base flange of a rail rested thereon, fastening members slidably engaged with the upper flanges of the first named member, one of said fastening members being engageable with the inner base flange of a rail mounted upon a plate, plates coactingwith the opposite ends of the first named member, and reinforcing webs interposed between the web of the first named member and the flanges thereof adjacent the opposite ends of said first named member.

A rail tie comprising an elongated member I-shaped in cross section, the central portions of the upper flanges of said member being cut-away, upstanding lugs carried by the opposite end portions of the member, a plate resting upon each end portion of the member, a marginal portion of said. plate interlocking with the adjacent lug, said plate being provided with an angular flange adapted to engage the base flange of a rail rested thereon, and fastening members slidably engaged with the upper flanges of the first named member, one of said fastening members being engageable with the inner base flange of a rail mounted upon a plate, each of said fastening members'being provided with means coacting with a plate to hold said plate against displacement.
5. A rail tie comprising an elongated member I-shaped in cross section, the cen tral portions of the upper flanges of said member being cut-away, upstanding lugs carried by the opposite end portions of the member, a plate resting upon each end por tion of the member, a marginal portion of said plate interlocking with the adjacent lug, said plate being provided with an angular flange adapted to engage the base flange of a rail rested thereon, and fastening members slidably engaged with the upper flanges of the first named member, one of said fastening members being engageable with the inner base flange of a rail mounted upon a plate, each of said fastening members being provided with means coacting with a plate to hold said plate against displacement, said means comprising an interfitting rib and groove.
6. A rail tie comprising an elongated member I-shaped in cross section, the central portions of the upper flanges of said member being cut-away, upstanding lugs carried by the opposite end portions of the member, a plate resting upon each end portion of the member, a marginal portion of said plate interlocking with the adjacent lug, said plate being provided with an angular flange adapted to engage the base flange of a rail rested thereon, fastening members slidably engaged with the upper flanges of the first named member, one of said fastening memhere being engageable with the inner base flange of a rail mounted upon a plate, and means for holding each of the fastening members against movement in a direction away from the coacting rail.
