Abstract
148,487. Russell, C. D. March 4, 1918, [Convention date]. Spikes.-A spike, particularly adapted for rail way use, has a shank 10 of rectangular crosssection, the front and rear faces of which are provided with quadrilateral recesses or mortices 14 and the sides with concave longitudinal channels 13. Preferably each recess 14 has a flat bottom and vertical sides with inclined flat or curved ends. The spike has an off-set head 11 and a chisel point 12 of less width than the shank. When driven into a wooden sleeper, the broken fibres of the wood take into the recesses 14 and the channels 13 and prevent twisting and withdrawal of the spike.
