Abstract
522,496. Thermionic valves ; photo-electric cells. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and BELL, D. A. Dec. 13, 1938, No. 36360. [Class 39 (i)] In order to select from among the electrons discharged from the cathode 1 of a discharge device working under space-charge conditions, such as a valve those the velocities of which are within a certain range the valve is subjected to an axial magnetic field and a number of barriers 2 are so arranged as to intercept the electrons with undesired velocities. The barriers may be integral with the cathode, or they may be at a slightly differential potential or they may be of non-conducting material; in these cases they should be as close to the cathode as possible. The thermionic cathode 1 may be replaced by a radio-active or photo-electric cathode.
