492,941. Exhaust systems. RADELET, F. Nov. 29, 1937, Nos. 32904 and 32905. Convention dates, Nov. 28, 1936 and Oct. 29, 1937. [Class 7 (ii)] Exhaust ports 3 lead to nozzle-shaped passages 4, arranged tangential to a passage 6 which is of spiral shape, and preferably has air inlets 6a, 7 at its small end and periphery; the ports are separated by tangential guides 5, which may be streamlined. The return of burnt gases is thus prevented during the time the ports are open. The passage 6 may be divided into sections each covering three or four ports, the sections being angularly adjustable to vary the effective area of the passages 4 according to the speed of the engine. In Fig. 8, adjustable constrictions in the passages 4 are each formed by a sliding lip 9 lifted at low speed by the suction in the induction pipe acting on a bellows 11. In Fig. 10, blades 5e, mounted on a rotor, rotate about the ports 3e and air is drawn through ports 7e. In a further arrangement, the ports are at different levels and are of different sizes, the smallest ports being opened first and arranged at the smaller end of the spiral passage. Alternatively, the ports may be at the same level, the piston edge being stepped to produce the same result.
