Abstract
444,733. Cooling cylinders. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. July 29, 1935, No. 21517. Convention date, July 28, 1934. [Class 7 (ii)] An air-cooled engine 2 for aircraft is fitted with a casing 9 having scooped air inlet openings 11 at the front located as far as possible from the hub of the propeller 5 so as to be exposed to the air blast from the propeller blades, the air after passage between the engine cylinders being discharged from the rear of the engine by a centrifugal fan 20 preferably driven by an exhaust gas turbine 24. The rear wall 12 of the casing is provided with openings controlled by pivoted flaps 14 for use when the discharge fan is not in operation. The flow of exhaust gases to the turbine or direct to the atmosphere may be controlled by a valve 29 in known manner.
