Abstract

530,691. Valves. MAWEN MOTOR CORPORATION. June 7, 1939, No. 16737. Convention date, June 7, 1938. [Classes - 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In engines in which relative rotation occurs between the ends of a bank of cylinders and an encircling annular valve, the inlet ports in the valve are shaped to direct the incoming gases into the cylinder ports with accelerated velocity. Fig. 2 shows an engine in which the cylinders 10 rotate in the opposite direction to the crankshaft 20, and are surrounded by a stationary annular valve 50 formed with inlet ports 52 and exhaust ports 54, the former having a transverse bridge 76 dividing the port into a narrow leading part 80, which gives the first incoming gases the accelerated speed, and a wider part 78. These parts of the inlet port are shaped as shown in Fig. 5, so that both the leading and trailing edges of the valve inlet ports and the circular cylinder ports 72 coincide in shape. In the case of the exhaust ports 54, only the trailing edges of these coincide in shape with the trailing edge of the cylinder port. The front edges 52 of the inlet passages are curved so as to give the incoming gases a tangential component in the direction of rotation of the cylinder port relatively to the valve. The exhaust passages are also shaped to give the outflowing gases a similar tangential component, and the leading end of the exhaust ports may be narrower than the trailing ends. The inlet and exhaust ports are so arranged that an overlapping communication is obtained with the cylinder so as to effect scavenging.
