Abstract

488,676. Yielding clutch plates. BORG & BECK CO., Ltd., and BARKER, H. T. July 1, 1937, No. 18261. [Class 80 (ii)] In a clutch - plate having shock - absorbing tangential coil springs 16 in registering slots 12... 14 in the hub flange 2, the disc 3 and a retainer plate 5, the springs are mounted each on a separate carrier 17 which projects beyond both ends of the spring, the carriers being wholly or in part within the thickness of the clutch-plate and being located at their ends to retain the springs in position. In one form, Figs. 2 and 3, the carriers 17 are tubular and engage notches 15 in the hub flange. The retainer plate 5 is secured to the disc 3 by rivets 6 passing through notches 7 in the hub flange to allow circumferential play. Washers 18 may be mounted on the carriers 17 at the ends of the springs. In modifications, in which the disc 3 and plate 5 are in contact with the hub flange, the carriers are solid rods 21, Fig. 6, with ends 22 flattened to a thickness equal to that of the hub flange, or flattened bars 24, Fig. 8, with curved edges 25 ; or the carriers may be of elliptical, square, polygonal, or circular section with one or more flats. The carriers may be retained by portions pressed out of the disc and retainer plate. The friction disc may be arranged between the hub flange and a retainer plate, or the retainer plate may be omitted.
