Abstract
463,758. Friction clutches. BORG & BECK CO., Ltd. April 4, 1936, No. 10028. Convention date, Nov. 14, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] In a driven clutch plate, one of the pistons facings is urged outwardly from a carrier disc 4 by separatelyformed cushion members which are so constructed as to effect cushioning in two or more stages during engagement of the clutch. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each cushion member comprises a doubly-bowed spring plate 12, one bowed part 16 being deeper than the other bowed part 15. The plate 12 is secured to the disc 4 by rivets 11 which are arranged between the parts 15 and 16 and which also serve to secure one facing 9 to the other side of the disc. The other facing 10 is secured by rivets 13 to the bowed part 16. The free end 24 of the part 15 contacts with the disc 4, while the free end 25 of the part 16 has a narrow extension 19 which engages a slot 21 in the disc 4 and contacts with the facing 9. The disc 4 is resiliently connected to a hub 2 as described in Specification 461,467 and is provided with substantially radial slots 8 to promote flexibility and to accommodate the heads of the rivets 13. Movement of the facing 10 toward the disc 4 is at first resisted only by the portion of the plate 12 lying between the rivets 11 and 13, acting as a cantilever spring, except for the slight resistance offered by the narrow extension 19. The end 25 then contacts with the disc 4, and the bowed portion 16 now acts as a semi-elliptic spring. The bowed portion 15 then contacts with the facing 10 so as further to increase the resistance. In the modified form shown in Fig. 8, the bowed portion 15 is omitted, the end 38 of the plate 12 being curved away from the disc 4 but being normally out of contact with the facing 10. In the form shown in Fig. 6, each plate 12 has two bowed portions 31 and 32 between which it is secured to the disc 4 by rivets 30, the facing 9 being secured to the disc by separate rivets 35. One bowed portion 32 is secured to the facing 10 by rivets 13, while the other bowed portion 31 merely contacts with that facing. The ends 36, 37 of the plate are curved toward the disc 4 but are normally out of contact therewith. Thus the portions 31, 32 first act as cantilever springs and then, as the ends come into contact with the disc 4, as semi-elliptic springs.
