Abstract
485,589. Motor power plant. BAUER, G. Nov. 21, 1936, No. 31913. [Class 110 (iii)] In a motor power plant comprising two reciprocating engines supplied with steam in parallel and an exhaust turbine arranged between them on a condenser, all machines driving a common shaft, the engines are so arranged that the cross-head guides are on the inner side of the engine frames in relation to the longitudinal mid-plane of the plant and the access doors on the other side, and the cranks rotate in opposite directions in such a way that the cranks of both engines simultaneously move outwards. Fig. 2 shows an exhaust turbine 3 mounted directly on a condenser 5 which is supported by feet 24 on projections 25 of the reciprocating engine frames. The lower end of the condenser is guided by projection 26 in a foot bearing 27. The engines 1, 2 are so arranged that the shafts 12, 13 rotate in opposite directions so that an improvement in the balance of the inertia forces is obtained. Fig. 4 shows a construction in which the side walls of the condenser casing 37 are integral with the adjacent engine frames. Releasable couplings placed between the engines and the shaft allow the disconnection of one or other of the engines for overhaul or for driving auxiliary machinery. The turbine may have an hydraulic or releasable coupling which may be used for the same purpose. A small auxiliary engine may also be releasably coupled to one of the reciprocating engines. The Provisional Specification contains a description of a plant in which the high and intermediate pressure cylinders of a reciprocating engine are placed on one side of the exhaust steam turbine and the low pressure cylinder on the other and another plant in which the high pressure cylinder is on one side and the low pressure on the other. The use of hydraulic couplings in the reciprocating engine drive is also mentioned. Specification 263,379, [Class 110 (iii)], is referred to.
