Abstract

485,440. Supplying liquid fuel. AEROPLANI CAPRONI SOC. ANON., and FUSCALDO, O. Sept. 7, 1937, No. 24365. Convention date, Sept. 14, 1936. Addition to 481,786. [Class 7 (iii)] In an engine having an electromagnetic fuelinjection valve as described in the parent Specification, the operation of the pump for supplying fuel to the valve is modified by subjecting the pump piston to the air pressure in the induction pipe, instead of to the pressure in the engine cylinder. The Figure shows a fuel injector 6<1> actuated by an electromagnet 6 and supplied with fuel through a pipe 20 by a pump 12 having a differential piston 9, 10, the larger portion 9 of which is in communication with the air intake 3 by a pipe 15 opening at 16 on the engine side of the throttle valve 4. The other side of the piston 9 is open to atmosphere at 17, or, if a compressor is used, is connected by a pipe 18 to the other side of the throttle valve. When the inlet valve 2 is opened, the depression caused at 16 operates the fuel pump to supply a charge of fuel. After the valve 2 closes, the fuel pump is returned by a spring 24 and draws in a fresh charge through a pipe 22 and port 23. The action of the spring 24 is varied by an opposing spring 25, which is adjustable by means of a screw abutment 26 actuated manually or automatically, so as to prevent increase in fuel injection when the engine speed decreases due to closing of the throttle valve.
