484,834. Universal joints. SILENTBLOC, Ltd., and TRIER, V. A. Feb. 5, 1937, No. 3469. [Class 80 (ii)] In a flexible coupling of the kind comprising axial rubber bushings F, mounted in a carrier D and connected alternately to shaft-flanges A, A, such connection is effected by the use of. intermediate plates B, B secured to the shaftflanges and the bushings. Thus, to dismantle the coupling it is necessary to remove only short bolts C connecting the flanges and intermediate plates, whereupon the carrier and intermediate plates can be removed laterally as a unit. The risk of the long bolts G of the bushings fouling adjacent apparatus when dismantling known couplings without such intermediate plates is thereby avoided. The rubber bushings F adhere by compression to the carrier D and to internal sleeves E, to which the bolts G are secured by nuts H, which also space the bushings from the plates B. The latter have large holes B<3>, accommodating the heads of the bolts G and have tapped holes receiving the bolts C, G. The plates B may be centred on the flanges either by a spigot connection, or in the case of circular flanges and plates, by flanged discs K, secured by the bolts C. Rectangular flanges and plates may be used. The carrier D is in two parts riveted together.
