476,333. Compound sheet materials. BIDDLECOMBE, J. A., and BROCKBANK, W. A. April 27, 1936, No. 11990. [Class 140] [Also in Groups XXIII and XXV] Layers 1 of penetrable material such as wood or plywood and one or more intermediate layers 2 e.g. of metal, are held together by metal tiemembers 3 not extending beyond the surface of the outer layer and shaped so as to be bent over when forced into the wood &c. The tie-members may be of strip metal chiselled on only one surface at each end, the metal layer or layers being slotted as at 4 to accommodate them. Alternatively metal strips chiselled at one end may be integrally attached at their other ends to a metal plate. Two such metal plates having chiselled strips upstanding on one side may be combined, the strips of each plate passing through slots in the other into the outer wood &c. layer. When two metal plates are used, a layer of rubber, compressed fibrous material, asbestos, or cork may be located between them ; or one metal plate may be used between two such other layers. An adhesive may be used as well as the tie-members. The material is suitable for constructing buildings, boxes and crates. According to the Provisional Specification, the tie-members may be H-shaped, the ends of the arms of the H being chiselled on opposite surfaces so that they splay apart when forced into the wood.
