Abstract

625,037. Compound sheet materials. BAKER, W. F., and OLIVER, A. June 24, 1946, No. 18874. [Class 140] [Also in Groups XXIII and XXXIII] In cellular panel or like work wherein sheets of plywood or other material are spaced apart by web elements which outline the cellular construction and are joined at opposite edges to the sheets, the web elements are set up in a jig so that each has a sinuous form with a plurality of crests extending in each direction, oppositely extending crests of adjacent elements being close to, or contacting each other, and these crests being bonded together by glue &c. without applying lateral pressure to the elements. The cells may be of hexagonal or other form. In the Figure, the jig comprises a metal or plywood base 1 to which are secured parallel bars of wood &c. which are slotted as at 3 to form lines of projections 4, about which the web elements are threaded; marginal portions of the base may receive fillets 5 forming a frame for the cellular structure and the fillets may be notched to receive the ends of the web elements. Bonding material is then applied to the edges of the strips and the sheets of plywood &c. applied thereto. The base 1 may form a part of the composite material, the fillets 5 being bonded thereto. The construction is applicable to surface construction on aircraft, walls, doors, ceilings, floors, &c. Specifications 556,620 and 625,036, [both in Group XXIII], are referred to.
