Abstract

475,491. Regulating air-compressors. BROOM & WADE, Ltd., and SMITH, C. B. March 17,1936, No. 7980. [Class 8 (i)] An air-compressor has an automatic plate delivery valve 26 and an inlet valve 9 with its axis inclined to the axis of the cylinder of the compressor and actuated by a cam 8 on the crank-shaft 6 through a tappet 10 coaxial with the valve 9. The tappet housing contains a spring-loaded piston 15 which is actuated by delivery pressure to raise the tappet 10 from the cam 8. In a modification the inlet valve axis and the tappet axis are parallel to the cylinder axis but the valve is placed nearer to the cylinder. In a further modification the axis of the inlet valve is inclined and the axis of the tappet is perpendicular to the crank-shaft. Fig. 4 shows a modification of last mentioned arrangement wherein the tappet is in two parts 52, 53. The part 52 is kept in contact with the cam 51 by a spring 56 and the part 53 is raised by the lever 60 actuated by the piston 62 exposed to delivery pressure. When used in compound stage compression the cam may actuate also the inlet valves of the high pressure cylinder the connecting rod 25<1> of which is connected to the same crank as connecting-rod 25.
