[Class 8 (i)] A refrigerating compressor comprises a differential piston b effecting first and second stages of compression in spaces e, f, the gas being transferred past an automatic valve i in the piston and the second stage compression being adjustable by a variable clearance space k. The piston is driven by a connecting rod passing through the part of smaller diameter and being pivotally connected to the part of larger diameter. The plunger l in this space may be controlled in accordance with the working temperature or range of temperatures, or it may be controlled manually or automatically in accordance with the first stage inlet pressure or with variations in the final delivery pressure or with the difference of these pressures. A clearance space o is connected with the first stage compression space e either constantly or through a valve m when the first stage pressure rises sufficiently, a valve n allowing return of air to the space e. The second stage clearance may be adjusted so that either the maximum force on the piston or the work done is the same in each stroke.
