Abstract

525,345. Cylinders. SMITH, T. G., and SMITH & CO.. Inc., G. Feb. 17, 1939, No. 5417. [Class 7 (ii)] In an arrangement for converting some o the cylinders into air-compressor cylinders the cylinder head is replaced by a head B, B<1> having small clearance over the cylinders 2, 3 concerned and suction and delivery valves 8d, 8g. These valves comprise flexible strips held in place by cages 8f, Fig. 7, having side lugs 108f. The suction valves may be unseated mechanically by rotation of screws 8i, or pneumatically by pressure on a piston 201 which strikes a pin 204. By connecting a pipe 206 to the compressed air tank and interposing hand cocks and a spring-loaded valve, control is provided which automatically cuts out one or both compressor cylinders as required. The normal cylinder valves are held down by the new head, the valve stems being shortened or the tappets removed.
