Abstract

455,102. Air compressors. RIDLEY, M. W. RIDLEY, VISCOUNT, Blagdon, Seaton Burn, Northumberland. May 29, 1935, No. 15652. [Class 8 (i)] [See also Group XXIX] To prevent jamming, the stem of a relief valve 7 slides without rotation in a rotary guide 10 formed with inlet and exhaust ports 11, 12 communicating with the atmosphere and with a screwed plug leading to a storage chamber. At a predetermined pressure the compressed air passes through passages 14 to lift the valve from its bevel seat on the end of a sleeve 9 enclosing the valve stem and allow the air to pass through the hollow stem to the atmospheric port 11. The valve guide is rotated from the crankshaft by gear wheels 23 which also act as oil pumps taking oil from the crank case and delivering it through passages to the crankshaft and the relief valve. The valve guide may have a reciprocating or other movement in place of rotation.
