Abstract

485,547. Rotary compressors. BOSCH AKT.-GES., R. Dec. 3, 1937, No. 33423. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1936. [Class 110 (ii)] The quantity of fuel gas or air supplied by a rotary blower to an internal-combustion engine is controlled in accordance with the engine speed by spring-loaded valves inside the blower pistons. Pistons 1, 2 are driven by the engine through a gear 8 and gears 9, 10, on the shafts 3, 4 to supply fuel gas or air from an inlet 24 to a delivery port 22. In the example shown in Figs. 1, 2, gears 9, 10 pump fluid through passages 26, 11, 12, to spaces 13 to force valves 17 to the right. As the engine speed increases, and the speed of shafts 3, 4 consequentially, the valves 17 move until ports 19 line up with ports 20 in the pistons 1, 2, and allow a passage of fluid from the compression chamber 22, to the suction chamber 24. Where the blower is delivering air to the engine, excess air passing into the port 20 may be led to atmosphere by way of a channel 28. A pin 29 in a slot 30 prevents rotation of each valve 17, which may be hollow. Fig. 4 shows a modified blower in which a spring-pressed valve 45 in each piston is actuated in its axial movement by a rod and bell-crank lever, controlled, for instance, by a centrifugal governor. Fig. 5 shows how the byepass passage in each piston is controlled by a valve 54, which under centrifugal action is flung outwards and overcomes the pressure of a spring 53. In a further arrangement the valve is a segmental plate on an arm, and normally held in a position covering one port 52 by a coiled spring. Centrifugal force causes the valve and its arm to rotate and gradually uncover the port 52.
