Valves.-In a locomotive comprising an internal-combustion cylinder c used to generate products of combustion which actuate an expansion engine e, balanced rotary or mushroom type valves, preferably cooled, are employed for the internal-combustion cylinder c and for the compressor a. The piston of the compressor a is a stepped extension of the piston in the cylinder c and delivers compressed air to a receiver b and thence to the cylinder c. The rotary exhaust or admission valve 1. Fig. 3, for the compressor a works in a cooled casing 2 and is held on its seating by a spring 3. In a modification, a rotary valve for the compressor has a straight-through passage and a cooling-medium circulates through the hollow valve-plug. A mushroom valve 11, Fig. 6, for the internal-combustion cylinder is provided with a piston 22, the space behind which is connected to the combustion chamber by a pipe 44 in order to balance the valve. Air cooling of the valve is effected by providing the hollow stem of the valve with air inlets 5 opening into the valve casing and a pipe 6 leading to the atmosphere.
