Abstract

271,587. Jackson, L. Mellersh-, (Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nurnberg Akt.-Ges.). March 11, 1926. Railway locomotives, internal - combustion engine and compressed air.-Air compressed by a pump b, Fig. 2, operated by an internalcombustion engine a is first expanded in the locomotive cylinders d and is then compressed again in the locomotive cylinder to such an extent that fuel injected at the end of the compression is automatically ignited. The expansion and subsequent compression of the air may take place (1) in the same cylinder and on the same side of the piston as shown in Fig. 2, (2) on opposite sides of a piston as shown in Fig. 4, or (3) in separate cylinders. The cycle for the construction shown in Fig. 2 is shown in Fig. 1. Air at (say) 8 atmospheres is admitted from 1 to 2 and expands from 2 to 3, exhausts from 3 to 4 and is compressed adiabatically from 4 to 5 to (say) 15 atmospheres; from 5 to 6 fuel is injected and burns, the burnt gases expand from 6 to 7, exhaust from 7 to 8, the residual gas is compressed from 8 to 9, and fresh air at 8 atmospheres is then admitted as before. The slide valve e is worked by the cam g. The compressed air from the pump b is heated in a receiver c, as by the exhaust gases from the engine a. In the construction shown in Fig. 4 a piston valve e admits compressed air from a conduit ax through a port dx to the left-hand end of the cylinder, exhausts it into a receiver i and admits it from the receiver to the right-hand end where it carries out the internal-combustion cycle, fuel being admitted at m. For starting and emergency use an air inlet valve n and an outlet valve o are provided, these valves being actuated, when required, by a lever p connected to the piston valve rod r. The lever p has an eccentric mounting q so that in its normal position it does not operate the valves n, o.
