Abstract

472,486. Liquid and pulverulent fuel burners. LORENZEN, C. March 23, 1936, No. 8609. [Class 75 (i)] A burner for liquid and pulverulent fuels comprises a rotary valve disc which is moved axially by the air pressure to maintain the fuel and air supplied to the combustion chamber in substantially constant proportions. The rotary valve disc shown consists of two plates 22, 23 secured together by screws 24 and mounted by ball-bearings 21 on a sleeve 18 sliding on a guide tube 14 forming part of a head 5 secured at the top of the combustion chamber 1. The sleeve 18 is pressed upwardly by a spring 13 resting on a support 10 carried by the head 5 until a needle 31 carried by the valve disc closes the outlet of a fuel nozzle 17 carried by the guide tube 14. When a throttle valve 4 in the air inlet 3 of the combustion chamber is opened the valve disc moves downwardly against the resistance of the spring 13 so as to allow fuel from the nozzle 17 and primary air entering through apertures 20 in the sleeve 18 to pass to the space between the plates 22, 23, and secondary air to enter between the divergent wall D of the combustion chamber and the rotary valve. The secondary air is directed by curved vanes 29 on a cap 28 covering the ballbearings 21 to radial blades 27 on the plate 22. The valve disc is thereby caused to rotate and the fuel and air mixture between the plates 22, 23 is discharged through apertures 25 into the secondary air. The fuel is supplied to the nozzle 17 through air inlet 6 past a pressure regulating device 16. The device 16 comprises a piston valve 50 which is moved relatively to fuel passages 45, 48, 49, in a plug 46 by a diaphragm 36 which is subjected on opposite side to the pressure of the fuel and an adjustable spring 39. The combustion chamber may be provided with baffles 35.
