Abstract
470,950. Carbonizing - apparatus. DIDIER-WERKE AKT.-GES. Nov. 5, 1936, No. 30128. Convention date, March 3. [Class 55 (i)] In continuous vertical retorts wherein the gases are withdrawn from the retort in an upward direction through an internal offtake, the offtake is formed in a hollow wall extending between the two end walls or the two side walls of the retort respectively, the offtake being in contact on two opposite sides with the fuel in the retort. More than one offtake may be used and they preferably extend from the top of the retort into the lower half thereof. In a retort 3 provided with a single offtake 5, the latter comprises parallel walls extending to the end walls of the retort, and above the latter the offtake continues through a preheating chamber 2. The fuel is thus preheated internally both within the retort and before it reaches the same. The preheater may also be externally heated. In a modification, the offtakes comprise built-in tubes 9, 9a, Fig. 2, extending to the side walls of the retort. The cross-section of the offtake is preferably greater than that of the fuel space formed between the walls of the offtake and the heating walls 8, 8a of the retort. Steam or other gases such as water gas may be introduced into the carbonization gases before withdrawal through the offtake.
