[Class 55 (i)] Hot flushing gas is introduced into an annular distillation retort 1, this gas consisting of gas distilled from the retort and introduced after condensation of tar, into a coke-cooling extension 3 by an outer pipe 4. This cold gas is preheated in chamber 3 and is withdrawn from an annular space 7, formed externally of an extension 2, by a fan 9, and passed through a heater 8 from which it is delivered to the lower end of the retort through an inner tube 5.
