[Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii)] The process and apparatus described in Specification 366,414 wherein coal gas is produced by the carbonization of coal in an externally heated carbonizing chamber 1, and water gas is simultaneously and continuously produced in an adjacent, independently operated, water gas chamber 2, the gases mixing at the upper parts of the chambers immediately after their liberation, is modified by the provision of a duct 15 between the lower parts of the two chambers to enable the gas generated in the lower part of the distillation chamber to readily escape into the water gas chamber and avoid undesirable gas pressure. The duct may be controlled by a damper 16.
