Abstract

223,387. Merz & McLellan, and Weeks, E. G. Oct. 3, 1923. Coking processes.--In a low-temperature fuel distillation process in which low pressure superheated steam is passed through the retort charge, air, sufficient to promote combustion of from 2 to 4 per cent of the charge, is supplied in addition to the steam and either or both the steam and air are preheated to a temperature of about that of the ignition of the fuel. A heating medium such as a neutral gas may be employed instead of steam and oxygen or an oxygen containing gas substituted for air. The steam is supplied through pipes 10 at the base of the retort, and above the discharge outlets 11 and the air is admitted through pairs of pipes 12, 13 below and adjacent to the coke extractors 14. The air supply to each pipe is separately adjustable and the openings in the air pipes are so arranged that each pipe of a pair discharges into the retort from only part of its length so that air may be admitted to any desired portion of the retort.
