[Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] A vertical carbonizing retort a with a minor axis of normal length has its major axis dimension considerably increased and is provided, at the lower end, with two vertical helical coke extractors b arranged side by side in the direction of the major axis and driven in unison from a common shaft f. The extractors b are separated by a partition c and deliver into a common coke chamber d. With a minor axis of 10 inches at the top of the retort, the major axis at the top is from 100 to 150 inches in length.
